A Military Operations Area (MOA) on a sectional chart is depicted with:

AA magenta hatched border with 'MOA' in the label
BA blue hatched border with 'R-' identifier
CA solid red line

Why →MOAs are depicted with magenta hatched borders and labeled with a name and 'MOA' suffix (e.g., 'Sulphur Springs MOA'). Altitude and activation times are typically listed in the chart margins. MOAs are not prohibited for civil aircraft but contain military training activity; pilots should check NOTAMs for activation status.

The trap →The blue hatched border with an R- identifier describes a Restricted Area. Restricted and MOA hatching patterns are similar but colors differ.

Field note →Restricted = blue = 'restricted from flight when active.' MOA = magenta = 'military activity present but not restricted.' The color carries the distinction.
