⚖ Operations · § 107.17, FAA UAG Sample Question 21OPS-016 · 186 of 261

You are a remote pilot tasked with a long drive before a flight assignment. After the drive, you arrive at the flight location feeling fatigued. As the remote PIC, you should

Acomplete the flight as quickly as possible to minimize your exposure time while fatigued.
Badvise your supervisor of your fatigue condition and ask for a reschedule.
Crest for 20 minutes and consume caffeine before attempting the flight.

Why →Under 14 CFR § 107.17, a remote PIC may not operate when they know or have reason to know of a physical or mental condition (including fatigue) that would interfere with safe operation. The appropriate action is to notify the supervisor and request rescheduling, not to rush through the flight or rely on caffeine.

The trap →Rushing a flight while fatigued increases risk by compressing the time pressure. Caffeine temporarily masks fatigue symptoms without restoring cognitive function. The regulatory answer and the safest answer are the same: don't fly while fatigued.

Field note →Schedule driving time when planning assignments. A long drive before a flight shifts your peak cognitive function to the travel, not the operation. When possible, arrive the night before a critical commercial flight.
