What service does a UNICOM station provide at a non-towered airport?
AAn air traffic control clearance to enter the traffic pattern
BA nongovernment radio station that may provide advisories such as the active runway, wind, and known traffic✓
CA mandatory frequency every aircraft must use to receive a landing sequence
Why →UNICOM is a privately operated radio station, often run by a fixed-base operator, that can supply advisory information such as the runway in use, wind, and known traffic. It does not provide air traffic control services or clearances. Pilots remain responsible for their own separation at non-towered airports.
The trap →UNICOM is advisory only. It cannot issue a clearance or a landing sequence, and it is not a controlling authority. Where no tower exists, no one issues clearances into the pattern.
Field note →At many fields the UNICOM and the CTAF are the same frequency. A remote pilot with an aviation receiver can monitor it to hear which runway manned traffic is using.
