The lateral boundary of Class D airspace extends approximately how far from an airport, and what are its altitude limits?

Why →
Class D airspace typically extends 4–5 NM from an airport with an operating control tower, from the surface to 2,500 feet AGL. The exact dimensions are published in the Chart Supplement and depicted on sectional charts with a dashed blue circle and altitude noted in a blue box. When the tower is closed, Class D typically reverts to Class E or G, removing the authorization requirement.
The trap →
5 NM to 4,000 AGL describes Class C inner circle dimensions. Class D is smaller: approximately 4–5 NM and only 2,500 AGL. The altitudes and radii are not universal. Always confirm with the Chart Supplement for the specific airport.
