In aviation decision-making, situational awareness (SA) is best defined as:

Why →
Situational awareness is the continuous, accurate mental model of all relevant factors. Aircraft state, environment (weather, airspace, terrain), crew state, mission status, and external pressures. Loss of SA is a leading accident precursor: pilots make critical errors when their mental model diverges from reality.
The trap →
Tracking multiple aircraft is a component of SA but not the definition. Following a checklist supports SA but is not the definition. SA is the total mental picture, not any single technique for achieving it.
