A remote pilot received their Part 107 certificate 27 months ago but has not flown commercially since. They receive a real estate photography inquiry today. Before accepting the job, what must they do?
Why →Under 14 CFR § 107.65, a remote pilot must have completed recurrent training within the previous 24 calendar months to exercise remote PIC privileges. Since April 2021 that requirement is met with a free online course at FAASafety.gov; there is no recurrent knowledge test at a testing center. At 27 months, this pilot's recency has lapsed and they may not act as remote PIC until completing the recurrent training.
The trap →The certificate itself does not expire, but the aeronautical knowledge currency does. Every 24 calendar months. The '90-day / 3 hours' rule is a manned aircraft (Part 61) passenger-carrying currency requirement with no Part 107 equivalent.
Field note →Set a calendar reminder at 22 months. The new 24 calendar month period runs from the month you complete the training, not from your old expiration date, so finishing early restarts the clock early.
