⚖ Regulations · § 89.305; FAA Remote ID Final Rule preamble (86 FR 4390)REG-045 · 42 of 261

Standard Remote ID allows a remote pilot to broadcast either the drone's serial number or a session ID as the unique identifier. What is the primary purpose of the session ID option?

ATo provide a privacy-protecting alternative that still allows law enforcement to identify the operator through FAA records
BTo allow the same drone to be registered to multiple operators simultaneously
CTo waive the Remote ID requirement for that flight

Why →A session ID is a randomly generated identifier issued per flight session that can be broadcast in place of the drone's serial number. It is designed for operators who want to reduce public traceability of their aircraft across multiple flights, while still allowing law enforcement with proper authority to obtain the matching operator record from the FAA. Session IDs do not change Remote ID obligations; they change which identifier is broadcast.

The trap →The "register one drone to multiple operators" option confuses session ID with shared-registration concepts that do not exist in Part 89. The "waive Remote ID for that flight" option treats session ID as a waiver mechanism, which it is not; it is a compliant Standard Remote ID option.

Field note →Session IDs matter most for commercial operators whose flight patterns might reveal client identity (e.g., surveying competitor properties). If privacy is a concern for a client, session ID broadcast is a legitimate and compliant choice.
