An AIRMET Zulu provides information about:
AModerate icing and freezing level heights.✓
BSevere turbulence and extreme low-level winds.
CPoor visibility and IFR ceiling conditions.
Why →AIRMET Zulu covers moderate icing not associated with thunderstorms and provides freezing level information. While most sUAS operations are at low altitudes where icing is uncommon, in cold weather at elevation, propeller icing can degrade performance rapidly.
The trap →Severe icing is covered by SIGMET, not AIRMET. AIRMETs cover moderate-level hazards primarily for light aircraft. Zulu is moderate icing only. Z for Zero degrees (freezing).
Field note →In cold weather at elevation, propeller icing builds fast. An active Zulu should send you to the actual temperature and dew point spread at your operating altitude.
