What does a rapidly falling barometric pressure reading indicate for weather planning purposes?
AApproaching high pressure system with improving weather.
BApproaching low pressure system with likely deteriorating weather, wind, and precipitation.✓
CStable air mass with no significant weather change expected.
Why →Barometric pressure falls as a low pressure system approaches. Low pressure is associated with rising air, instability, clouds, precipitation, and stronger winds. A rapid fall (more than 0.06 inches Hg in 3 hours) is a strong signal of fast-approaching severe weather. High pressure systems bring stable, descending air with good visibility and calm conditions.
The trap →Rising pressure means improving conditions; falling means deteriorating. "Stable air" describes the result of high pressure, not of a falling barometer.
Field note →Weather apps that show a pressure trend arrow are handing you this signal directly. A significant drop between your preflight check and mid-shoot is a reason to land even if the sky still looks fine.
