Before flying a small UAS near a non-towered airport, the most reliable way to identify current conditions, active runway, and any temporary restrictions is to:

ACall the airport manager's office for weather and traffic information.
BCheck the Automatic Terminal Information Service (ATIS) recording or use a pre-flight planning app that aggregates NOTAMs and weather.
CContact the nearest ARTCC center on their published frequency.

Why →ATIS provides a continuous automated broadcast of current airport conditions: ceiling, visibility, wind, active runway, and relevant NOTAMs, updated whenever significant changes occur. Drone pilots can access ATIS by telephone (most airports publish a phone number) or through preflight apps like Aloft or ForeFlight that aggregate this data alongside LAANC authorization status.

The trap →The airport manager has no real-time weather authority. ARTCC (en route center) handles high-altitude IFR traffic and is not a resource for local airport conditions. ATIS is designed exactly for this purpose and is freely accessible.

Field note →ATIS is alphabetically coded. "Information Bravo" is the second update of the day. For critical commercial operations, check ATIS immediately before launch, not just during planning an hour prior.
