What is the purpose of a Common Traffic Advisory Frequency (CTAF) at an airport without an operating control tower?

ATo obtain ATC clearance for drone operations in the airport vicinity.
BA frequency where pilots self-announce position and intentions to other aircraft operating in the traffic area.
CA mandatory check-in frequency for all pilots within 10 miles of the airport.

Why →CTAF is a designated radio frequency for pilots to make self-announce position reports at non-towered airports or when the tower is closed. It enables traffic awareness among aircraft in the pattern. Drone pilots are not required to monitor CTAF but understanding its purpose is Part 107 knowledge test material.

The trap →CTAF is not an ATC authorization channel. There is no ATC at a non-towered airport. It is also not mandatory for all pilots within 10 miles. It is a voluntary (though strongly encouraged) coordination tool.

Field note →When flying near a non-towered airport, knowing the CTAF frequency (shown on the sectional chart with a magenta "C" symbol) lets you monitor manned traffic on a handheld aviation radio, adding real situational awareness without a transmission requirement.
