At what time of day are sUAS operations permitted under standard Part 107 rules (without a waiver)?
Why →Under 14 CFR § 107.29 (as amended), sUAS may operate during daytime, civil twilight (30 minutes before official sunrise through 30 minutes after official sunset), and at night. Both civil twilight and night operations require anti-collision lighting visible for at least 3 statute miles.
The trap →The rule was updated in 2021 to allow night operations without a waiver. "Daytime only" reflects the pre-2021 rule. No additional equipment is required beyond the anti-collision light, no special certification or waiver for night.
Field note →Anti-collision light visibility at 3 statute miles is the key requirement for night ops. Test your lighting system at distance before your first night operation, not all strobe lights are bright enough at that range.
