⚖ Operations · § 107.49(a); FAA-G-8082-22, Crew Resource ManagementQ-215 · 215 of 251

Before a flight that uses a visual observer, what must the remote pilot in command ensure the visual observer understands prior to launch?

Why →
Under 14 CFR § 107.49(a), the remote PIC must ensure all crew members, including visual observers, are briefed on their roles before operations begin. The visual observer's function is to assist the remote PIC in seeing and avoiding other aircraft and hazards. This requires the VO to know how to communicate a hazard and what to do if normal communication breaks down or an emergency occurs.
The trap →
Equipment specifications are irrelevant to the VO's safety function. A VO who knows the drone model but not how to call out a hazard provides no operational safety benefit.
